Free-agent pitcher Johnny Cueto agreed to a deal with the San Francisco Giants on Monday. The deal is pending a physical.
According to ESPN the deal is for six years and $130 million. The deal includes a team option for 2022. Cueto can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after the 2017 season. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the St. Louis Cardinals were among the teams that expressed interest in Cueto.
Cueto was acquired by the Kansas City Royals in July in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds. He was 4-7 with a 4.76 ERA with the Royals. This year he was 11-13 with a 3.44 ERA and 176 strikeouts, according to MLB.com. Cueto is 96-70 with a 3.30 ERA and has made one All-Star appearance in his eight year career.
Cueto becomes the Giants latest addition after they signed free-agent pitcher Jeff Samardzija to a five-year, $90 million deal. The Giants were 84-78 this year and finished second behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
