Forbes has just released the yearly list of most overpaid actors in Hollywood, and Adam Sandler has officially been dethroned.
Forbes has named Johnny Depp the most overpaid actor in Hollywood after a string of box office bombs. He returns $1.20 for every $1 paid, as Mortdecai grossed $7 million domestically on a $60 million budget, while Transcendence made $23 million in the U.S. but cost $100 million.
Depp's salary for these films was $10 million and $20 million respectively, meaning he was paid nearly the same amount as the movies made in the U.S.
Depp's recent Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass was more successful, though, making $62 million domestically on a $53 million budget. But the actor has not lead a movie that was a smash hit at the box office since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Following that sequel, The Rum Diary, Dark Shadows and The Lone Ranger were all disappointments. With The Lone Ranger, meant to be the next Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney reportedly lost $150 million.
Other names on Forbes' list included Denzel Washington, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Will Smith, although in terms of sheer number of failed films in a row, none came close to Johnny Depp. Adam Sandler was not eligible for the list due to his recent movie appearing on Netflix, which does not release any data to the public.
