Comedy Central host Larry Wilmore is heading to the White House Correspondents' dinner in 2016.
The Nightly Show comedian was announced as the new host of the annual Washington event this morning, according to Politico. Wilmore will be following in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert, who used to occupy Wilmore's time slot and hosted the dinner back in 2006.
“Larry's edgy, even provocative, brand of humor means he's certainly up to the task of skewering politicians of all ideological stripes, and we don't expect the nation's news media to escape unscathed, either," said White House Correspondents’ Association President Carol Lee.
Formerly a correspondent on The Daily Show, Wilmore's The Nightly Show premiered in January 2015 following Colbert's departure from the network. During the first three months, his ratings were down 40 percent from The Colbert Report. The series now averages roughly 500,000 viewers for each episode, while The Daily Show hovers around 800,000.
Previous hosts of the White House Correspondents' dinner have included Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson. The event will air on April 30, 2016.
