Writer Damon Lindelof wants a third season of The Leftovers just as badly as you do.

In a post-finale interview with HitFix, the show's creator said he's fighting for the life of the series, which has been down in the ratings since last year.

"The reality is, everybody felt that the show was ascending a bit, creatively and ratings-wise, towards the end of the [first] season, and in the interim between the two seasons, we lost a lot of the audience coming into this year," Lindelof said. "That's the situation that we're in."

Lindelof explained that if the series had always received the ratings it does now, it wouldn't be as big of an issue, but the fact that there was such a dramatic loss in viewership between seasons is a problem. He said that it would certainly help a lot if the finale received a ratings bump, though, as it wouldn't be good for the future of the series if there was another dropoff between episode 9 and 10.

"But the reality is, I'm talking to HBO. We're going to sit down before the holidays and get a sense of where everybody's head is at," he said. "I certainly want to make more episodes of The Leftovers."

The HBO series lost about half its audience between the season 1 finale and the season 2 premiere, down 800,000 viewers. The ratings have not improved much since then, and so we may very well have seen the last of the Garveys.
