Director George Miller wanted to present a version of Mad Max: Fury Road in black and white, but that cut has still not been available. Now, it looks like this version of the movie may finally be getting an official release.

In an interview with Screen Daily, producer Doug Mitchell said that not only does the original black and white cut still exist, but it might receive a theatrical release in 2016. George Miller also noted that this was the way he originally intended the movie to be seen.

Though the 2015 theatrical release of Fury Road was in color, Miller said the alternate black and white version would be made available on the home release. Unfortunately, that did not happen for reasons that are not clear, but perhaps the studio always intended to put it out separately.

Miller even noted a few months ago that "the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now."

Mad Max: Fury Road is now available on DVD and blu-ray. The film was recently nominated for Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards.
