Melissa McCarthy confirmed the news that CBS has cancelled Mike & Molly, the show that was instrumental in helping her career. Co-star Billy Gardell also announced that the sixth season will be its last.
CBS made the decision very quietly and has still yet to make a statement. The show’s fans only learned that it was cancelled last week when actress Rondi Reed said that only 13 episodes will be made instead of the usual 22. Production wraps up on Jan. 27.
After Reed’s comments were finally picked up by the Hollywood media, McCarthy tweeted that she was “shocked” by the news. She probably knew earlier, but the Spy star might have been told not to say anything until an announcement was made.
Gardell, who played the Mike of the title, also thanked fans for their support on Twitter.
The dual success of an Emmy for Mike & Molly and an Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids helped make McCarthy one of the top stars in Hollywood. While the end of Mike & Molly means that it will be awhile before she is on television again, she can be seen on the big screen in The Boss on April 8 and Ghostbusters on July 15.
Mike & Molly’s final season starts on Jan. 6.
