A jury could not reach a decision of whether police officer William Porter was guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the death of Freddie Gray.
Reuters noted that after 16 hours of deliberating and continuing to insist they were deadlocked, the jurors did not have a verdict Wednesday and Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams declared a mistrial.
"I do declare a mistrial," Williams said, adding that an administrative judge would set a new trial date within the coming days.
As we previously reported, six police officers including Porter were charged in May for Gray’s death after he suffered a spinal injury while in their custody.
Before the officers were charged, the city of Baltimore was in an uproar and riots broke out. In light of today’s ruling, the Gray family has asked that the community remain calm.
"We ask the public to remain calm, patient, because we are confident there will be another trial and a different jury. If we are calm, you should be calm,” Gray's stepfather, Richard Shipley said.
