Dexter fans were elated when news broke of a possible revival, but the network has now officially denied that rumor.
Showtime representatives told The Hollywood Reporter that there are no current plans to bring back the series.
These rumors were sparked last week when the official Dexter Twitter account put up a Thanksgiving post that included the phrase "his knife's freshly sharpened," possibly suggesting a return of the character. Especially considering Showtime president David Nevins has openly said he'd consider ordering a reboot, this tweet seemed like a hint at that.
But the network told THR that it was simply meant to be a Thanksgiving message for Dexter fans, as the Twitter account continues to send out posts years after the series' conclusion. Similar updates have been posted on holidays before, such as one on Halloween of this year.
This makes sense, as bringing back Dexter so soon would certainly be strange. The series aired its final episode just two years ago, and it didn't appear to leave too much open for a spinoff. The last episode was also nearly universally despised and caused plenty of fan backlash, so perhaps the show is best left alone.
