If you've found yourself overwhelmed with the number of shows you want to catch up on, that might be because there was more to watch in 2015 than ever before.
According to an FX study, there were a record number of scripted series on the air in 2015: a total of 409 across broadcast, cable and streaming services. This is a 9% increase since last year and a 94% increase since 2009.
"This statistic is staggering and almost unimaginable from where they were a decade ago,” said Julie Piepenkotter, Executive Vice President of Research for FX Networks.
If there's one person this news probably doesn't surprise, though, it's FX CEO John Landgraf. At the Television Critics Association press tour over the summer, he said that there is simply too much TV and he predicted the number of scripted shows on the air would soon pass 400. He also predicted that this number would increase again in 2016 and then start to fall after that.
“My sense is that 2016 or 2017 will represent peak TV in America, and then we will see a decline,” Landgraf said. “There is too much competition ... and I believe it’s impossible to maintain quality control.”
