Back in 2012, when Disney bought Lucasfilm, several Star Wars projects were left for dead, even an incredibly interesting live-action television series and the highly-anticipated video game 1313. Even though most thought these projects would never see the light of day, Kathleen Kennedy said that they are still on the table.
During an interview with SlashFilm, Lucasfilm President Kennedy admitted that they are actually still going through material George Lucas developed for the live-action series. It would have been the first live-action Star Wars series and was rumored to be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with a focus on the Star Wars underworld.
When asked if the scripts were just sitting on a shelf, Kennedy replied, “No. No, interestingly enough, that’s an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore.”
Then, Kennedy brought up 1313, a game that LucasArts was developing for an adult audience and was about Boba Fett. 1313 was ultimately cancelled when LucasArts ceased to exist and Electronic Arts won the licensing rights to develop Star Wars games. (It’s also been rumored that a Darth Maul game was cancelled, too.)
SlashFilm brought up the 1313 concept art, which Kennedy called “unbelievable.”
“So our attitude is, we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold,” Kennedy continued. “And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to.”
Disney is always looking for new ways to mine their properties, so it seems like it will only be a matter of time before they announce a Star Wars live-action series. And considering they already have a relationship with Netflix through the Marvel shows, Netflix would be a good landing spot for a more serious Star Wars project.
