Clint Eastwood’s next film will focus on another real-life American. Sully, which stars Tom Hanks as the pilot who famously landed a plane on the Hudson River, will open in September 2016.
Warner Bros. announced on Friday that the film will open on Sept. 9, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Although it won’t be in 3D, the film will get an IMAX release.
Eastwood signed on to direct the film in June and Hanks joined a few days later.
Based on Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger’s autobiography Highest Duty, which was written with Jeffrey Zaslow, the film will tell the story of how the pilot successfully landed a plane on the Hudson River after its engines were taken out by a flock of geese. His decision saved the lives of all 155 people on board and was quickly dubbed the ‘Miracle on the Hudson.’
The script was written by Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger) and will also star Laura Linney, Aaron Eckhart and Jamey Sheridan. The producers are Eastwood, Frank Marshall, Allyn Stewart and Tim Moore.
Eastwood is a four-time Oscar winner thanks to Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven. His previous film, last year’s American Sniper, was nominated for Best Picture.
