James Cameron's action masterpiece Terminator 2 will return to theaters in 2016 and this time with a brand new 3D conversion.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron is working with DMG Entertainment and Studiocanal to convert his Terminator sequel to 3D. This will mark the 25th anniversary of the film and the director noted it was the perfect time to bring it back.
"If you’ve never seen it, this’ll be the version you want to see and remember," Cameron said.
After helping to usher in the new 3D craze with Avatar, Cameron also gave his movie Titanic a 3D conversion in 2012 and that re-release grossed $343 million worldwide. Converting the 1997 movie to 3D took 14 months and cost $18 million.
Terminator 2 3D will be especially marketed to China, where the new version will premiere for the first time. This makes sense considering how massively popular Terminator Genisys was in China. Though the newest sequel was considered to be a disappointment in the U.S, it had an incredibly impressive run in China though and ended up grossing $350 million worldwide.
Still, considering how uncertain the future of Terminator is after Genisys, Terminator 2 might be the franchise's last time in theaters for quite some time.
