What makes a flop? If you’re looking at a facet of pop culture in 2015, it’s how few people bought a record, saw a movie, or watched a TV show, and the amount of negative word-of-mouth something got.
If you were to assess 2015 as a whole, it would be this: Consumers don’t want to watch a movie unless it’s really, really good or very predictable. And when there’s bad press beforehand? Forget about having a hit, let alone a flick that ends up in the top 10.
Music, on the other hand, seemed to go a different way: We loved comebacks (here’s to you, Justin Bieber and Adele), but aren’t so keen on older artists chasing after trends.
And, for TV? Originality’s worth watching, and because of the creativity allowed in streaming and cable media, putting together a mediocre series means everyone hates it.
