Career and reputation-driven characters go to great lengths to get what they want in this week’s new releases. As the Christmas season begins, a holiday-inspired film also hits theaters, turning joy into terror.

The holidays take a dark turn in Krampus. When a young boy rejects Christmas, he unknowingly causes evil to take over, replacing Santa Claus with a deadly monster. Adam Scott and Toni Collette star in the PG-13 film. The comedic horror film runs for one hour and 38 minutes.

Shakespeare’s tragedy, set in the Scottish kingdom, is retold in Macbeth. In the one hour and 53-minute drama, a duke and his wife go to great lengths to take down the king and gain control of the country. The unrated film stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. It’s available in limited theaters.

Get a new perspective on legendary actor James Dean with Life. The one hour and 51-minute drama showcases the friendship he had with photographer Dennis Stock as his career began to skyrocket. Dane DeHaan, Robert Pattinson, Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton star in the limited released film. It’s rated R for sex, nudity and language.

A mob-obsessed man tries to manipulate the jury in the 1992 John Gotti trial in The Wannabe. When things don’t go his way, he finds other means to become part of the mafia lifestyle he has always idolized. The one hour and 30-minute drama is based on real events and stars Patricia Arquette, Vincent Piazza, Michael Imperioli, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Nick Sandow. The limited released film is rated R for drugs, language, sex and violence.

A man befriends an eccentric old woman who lives in her vehicle in The Lady in the Van. He lets her park her van in his driveway for three weeks, but she overstays her welcome and ends up extending her stay for fifteen years. Maggie Smith stars in the PG-13 drama. The limited released, one hour and 44-minute film is based on real events.

An accomplished filmmaker and composer vacation together in the Swiss Alps in Youth. As one is putting on the final touches to his final film, the other is glad to have his musical career behind him. During their stay, the two reminisce about their lives and realize there’s more to come. The limited released drama stars Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz and Jane Fonda. Gang and gun violence play a key role in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq. With the lives of many being affected by firearms, the women of Chicago take a stand and boycott the local armory. Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Teyonah Parris, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and D.B. Sweeney star in the one hour and 58-minute drama. The limited released film is rated R for sex, nudity, language, violence and drugs.

Macbeth brought a Shakespeare classic to the big screen this week. Next week, the story that inspired Moby Dick is told in In The Heart Of The Sea. A star-studded cast makes up The Big Short, another film to be featured in next week’s Trailer Park, slated to hit theaters on December 11.
