Fox's hit science fiction drama Wayward Pines will return for a second season in 2016.

Although initially imagined as an event series, Fox announced this morning that the M. Night Shyamalan show would return for all new episodes next summer. This news comes five months after the season 1 finale aired.

Season 2 will pick up directly following the events of the first season, when a new arrival in the town finds himself in the midst of a rebellion. Wayward Pines was a massive success for Fox earlier this year, becoming the highest rated broadcast scripted series of the summer among adults 18-49.

"We were absolutely blown away by the mysterious and surprising world that Night and his team created, and the twisting-and-turning storytelling that drew viewers in from day one,” said David Madden, president of entertainment at Fox. “Season Two is going to take the suspense, the vision of the future and the haunting character drama to whole new levels, and we can’t wait for our fans to continue that ride next year.”

The first season of Wayward Pines was very much structured around its twist, and so now that viewers already know the town's secrets, it should be a very different dynamic for season 2. Matt Dillon is not expected to return.
