For the first time in a year former NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will return to primetime on Monday to cover the Iowa caucuses.
Entertainment Weekly has reported that the disgraced news anchor will in fact return to the primetime news desk to co-anchor the event with Rachel Maddow.
As we previously noted, Williams was suspended in February 2015 after he gave a report centering on an Iraq War veteran in which he talked about being in a helicopter in 2003. He claimed that the chopper he was in had been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fire. However, it was later revealed that Williams was actually in the copter following the one that got hit. He was suspended by NBC and Lester Holt replaced him as the Nightly News lead anchor.
“I told stories that were not true,” Williams admitted in an interview last June. “Over the years, looking back, it is very clear. I never intended to. It got mixed up. It got turned around.”
Williams returned to television in September to cover Pope Francis’ visit to America as well as breaking news stories for MSNBC. His coverage of the caucuses will mark his first time back in primetime since his suspension. The station’s coverage will also feature other MSNBC personalities including Chris Hayes, Kasie Hunt, Hallie Jackson, Chris Jansing, Katy Tur and Kristen Welker.
