In a blow to St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, the NFL committee on Los Angeles has chosen to support the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders’ plan to share a stadium in Carson, California.
NFL.com reports that the Carson project’s presentation included an appearance from Disney CEO Bob Iger, who will oversee development. Chargers owner Dean Panos also spoke before the NFL owners meeting in Houston. At the end, the six-member committee picked Carson over Kroenke’s plan to build a stadium in Inglewood.
This means that the NFL would support the idea of having two teams in the same division sharing a venue. According to USA Today, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had suggested the Chargers join the Rams’ plan so two teams that aren’t division rivals would share a venue. The Chargers later said that they weren’t interested in that move and the team is committed to Carson.
Proposals to move a team need 24 votes from the NFL owners to be approved. If Jones’ plan does go up for a vote and succeeds, the Chargers would be forced to move with the Rams. A source told Pro Football Talk that the Chargers would want a one-year delay to keep that from happening.
The NFL owners meeting continues through tomorrow.
Update: ESPN reports the Rams have been approved to relocate to Los Angeles.
