Those 76 trombones are going to have to stay locked away a little longer. That’s because NBC has picked Hairspray over The Music Man for its next live musical.
Although deals aren’t done, Entertainment Weekly reports that NBC Entertainment chief Bob Greenblatt mentioned during the Television Critics Association press tour that Hairspray will be its next live musical. It will air in December and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be back.
All three of NBC’s live musicals have been successes, with December’s The Wiz Live! becoming a nice rebound from 2014’s Peter Pan Live!. However, neither of them did as well as the first, 2013’s The Sound of Music Live! with Carrie Underwood. But none of them have done poorly enough for NBC to ditch the format. The Wiz had 11.14 million viewers and a 3.3 18-49 rating, despite airing against a NFL football game.
“People have been saying to me since The Wiz, ‘Do this show, do that show,” Greenblatt said today. ““I’ve heard obscure titles and famous titles. Not everything’s going to be a big name to the whole audience. I don’t think there’s an infinite number of these that can be done. But we’re still doing it.”
Hairspray the musical is based on John Waters’ 1988 film and opened on Broadway in 2002. Zadan and Meron produced the 2007 film version of the musical.
“I don’t think we’re going to try to replicate the movie. We want to do a new version of it,” Greenblatt said. Although, he later said that John Travolta could come back if he wanted to.
Back in May 2014, NBC said that Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man would be the 2015 musical. Obviously, that didn’t happen. It’s possible that NBC has decided that more modern musicals might connect with today’s audience. Sure, The Music Man is timeless, but it comes from the same decade as Peter Pan, which didn’t click as well as The Wiz.
