Jane The Virgin came back last night with Rogelio’s mother coming to town with big news. But before that occurred, we saw a young Jane dealing with a boy who always gave her a hard time, apparently because she didn’t let him copy her Math assignments. Later, an older Jane has a dream about Michael, but is interrupted when Mateo begins crying. It turns out he is going through sleep regression and keeping everyone awake. While Alba tells Jane to let him cry it out, Xo begs Jane to get him to sleep so she can get some rest before the visit.
The next day, Jane talks to Alba and Xo about other sleep training methods besides letting the baby cry himself to sleep. One of them involves stuffing the baby’s lovey in her bra. Eventually, Rogelio arrives with Liliana, who is acting depressed. After she goes to see Mateo, Jane follows to see what is up. She learns that her grandfather is gay and apparently left her mother. Liliana makes Jane promise not to tell anyone, especially Rogelio. So Jane makes up a story about bad airline food before leaving to go to her teaching assistant job.
Meanwhile, Petra sits with her lawyer and Rafael. The case against her does not look good, especially since her mother got rid of the hook she used to kill Ivan. They need to figure out what to do otherwise Petra will go to prison for murder.
Jane begins her teaching job, which involves talking to students about popular books, including Pride and Prejudice. However, when she asks them questions, the students don’t appear to listen. She calls on Matt McNeil, aka McBaskets, to hear his thoughts on a quote from the book. However, it is clear he didn’t read it and another guy asks if they can talk about dropping the class.
Later, Jane watches a sports game to try and connect with her students while Alba balks at a book Jane is reading about sleep training. She still firmly believes in letting Mateo cry himself to sleep. After she leaves, Jane texts her mom about food and asks about Cubanos from the food truck. But when Xo walks toward the truck, she sees Michael with another woman.
Later, Michael is working the Mutter case with Susannah, who is not looking forward to having to talk to Luisa again for answers.
Back with the Villanueva women, Jane is awkwardly listening to Liliana talk about Manuel, her grandfather, just as Xo arrives. After Liliana leaves, Jane and Xo reveal each other’s secrets to the other. After this, Jane gets Mateo ready for bed and tells Alba and Xo how she plans to get Mateo back to sleep. Unfortunately, this does not go well.
Petra tries to talk to her mother in hopes of getting her to admit what happened on the night of Ivan’s murder. Unfortunately for Petra, her mother doesn’t take the bait.
The next morning, Jane tells Alba and Xo about her new method of getting Mateo to sleep, which involves checking on him at certain times until he falls asleep. Alba thinks too much coddling is happening, revealing Xo told her about Liliana’s secret. Alba impresses Jane with her feelings that he is living a full life, which she understood through a gay friend at church.
Susannah talks to Luisa, who is having a hard time remembering anything about her mom since she was so young. The detective tries to relate with her own experience of being abandoned by her father. Luisa is amused when Susannah tries to get her to open up by using her crush, but she is able to talk about a story about magical fish in a lake. Susannah remembers hearing about a lake in her mother’s file and finds a place called Longbourne Lagoon.
Jane is working and relates a championship game to the book. When the bell rings and students turn in their assignments, she notices McBaskets isn’t one of them. He asks for an extension, which she willingly gives, but he has to have it in her inbox the next day.
At home, the women listen to Rogelio, who believes his father is dying and that’s why his mother is upset. When he begins listing off things to do for his father’s bucket list, Jane reveals the truth. At first Rogelio doesn’t believe it, until he thinks about the things his father enjoyed, including Wicked on Broadway. He wonders why his mother didn’t tell him and finds out from Jane she thought he wouldn’t be able to handle it. Rogelio decides to show his mom he can.
Later that night, Jane tries another round of getting Mateo to sleep by leaving him alone for five minutes. However, it doesn’t work out, once again. Xo tries to distract her by having her look up Michael’s girlfriend on Facebook. But Jane is distracted when Mateo bumps his head and she goes to comfort him. As she holds him in front of the laptop, she is horrified when Mateo’s feet glide over the mouse and cause her to send a friend request to the girlfriend.
The next morning, Jane is obsessing over having made the request, which she immediately cancelled. However, she is worried that the girl might still have gotten the notification and could tell Michael. When the topic moves to Mateo causing them all to lose sleep, Alba points out that Jane is not too firm. Jane doesn’t believe her and is happy to see the paper from McBaskets.
However, it turns out McBaskets plagiarized a famous paper that Jane knew since she wrote about it in college. Instead of giving him another chance, she fails him.
Meanwhile, Michael and Susannah go to the lake that they discovered and find out Luisa’s mother had lived there. They ask how long ago it had been since she was at the site.
Petra and Rafael discuss her situation. The lawyer offered her a plea of 18 months, but Rafael doesn’t want her to take a plea. Petra has a dizzy spell and Rafael wonders when she last ate.
At the Villanueva home, the family has dinner with Luca, Jane’s co-worker from the Marbella, and the friend of Alba’s from church. But things don’t go so well and Liliana admits the reason she didn’t tell Rogelio about Manuel was because once she told him, then it meant her husband would tell everyone and actual leave after 47 years.
Outside, Rogelio and Liliana talk about the situation. She tells him she moved in with Manuel right away and she has never been alone before. Rogelio assures her she has him.
At the hotel, Rafael is making Petra some bacon and ignoring calls from his mother. Petra tells him he should consider hearing her out. When he begins sharpening a knife, Petra feels sick and tells him to stop since he’s holding the murder weapon. Rafael tells her new cutlery came in after the holidays, meaning after Ivan had been killed.
Jane is home with Alba and Xo trying out Alba’s method. She gets a call from Professor Blake, who is dealing with university politics and needs her to give McBaskets another chance. Just as Jane groans about this occurring, Alba shows Jane the baby monitor to see Mateo is fast asleep.
Jane goes to McBaskets to tell him she still wants him to write the paper. He doesn’t want to since he knows he’s not good at writing. He points out she’s not doing something she knows she can’t do, like play basketball. So Jane tells him that if she makes a basket, he has to write the paper.
The two play basketball and even though Jane does a horrible job, Matt agrees to write the paper.
Magda comes to see Petra and is happy about the plea she took. But then Petra tells her that she found out that the murder weapon came to the hotel after the murder, meaning Magda falsified evidence. As she leaves under arrest, Magda tells Petra she will made the “wrong choice.” The voiceover tells us that this will eventually haunt the mother-to-be, which the audience is not allowed to know. Rafael closes the door and comforts her.
Jane opens her door to see Michael is there, not too happy about the friend request incident. She tells him what happened and mentions the tree topper. He tells her he did that because he knew what it meant to her family. He tells her he’s happy and wants her to be happy, too. Later, Jane unfriends Michael from her account.
The next morning, after a restful night sleep for everyone, including Mateo, and Jane tells her family that Matt turned in his paper. When the doorbell rings, they see it is Manuel, who got an e-mail from his supportive son. He asks Liliana why she told their son without him and they discover Liliana knew about him being gay for years.
Elena talks to Rafael about how when she married his father and became pregnant, it all happened so fast within the first year she had been in the country. As they talk, we see Susannah tell Luisa that her mother lived on the lake until she died eight years previously. They share an unexpected kiss and then she goes back to see Michael, who informs Susannah that he figured out Elena is Mutter.
Just as Rafael finds a bundle of letters wrapped in blue silk thread and tries to make a call, Elena sticks a needle in his neck and asks about the flash drive. He tells her it is with Rose, but she no longer has it, and he collapses.
