During a Twitter AMA session on Wednesday, Making a Murderer filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi revealed the Netflix documentary series almost didn’t happen because of the State of Wisconsin’s attempts to block it from airing.

Part of the theme of the series was the question of whether or not Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey got a fair trial before being found guilty of murdering Teresa Halbach in 2007.

“There were many challenges,” they tweeted. “One was when the State of Wisconsin tried to subpoena our footage. We had to hire a lawyer and file a motion to quash the subpoena which we won. If State had won they would have effectively shut down the production.”

Demos and Ricciardi also spoke to Jodi Stachowski’s claims that she asked them to be taken out of the series. Since it aired, she has backtracked on her claims that her ex-fiance is innocent.

“The filming we did w/ her 9 years ago accurately captured her views and state of mind at the time,” the filmmakers wrote. “We had her permission to use all the footage. It’s not true that she asked us not to be part of the documentary.”
