The upcoming Masters of the Universe reboot may have found its director.
According to Deadline, McG is in talks to direct the new live-action Masters of the Universe film for Sony Pictures. This would be He-Man's first time on the big screen in almost 30 years, as the original Masters of the Universe film was released in 1987.
The screenplay for the reboot was written by Alex Litvak (Predators) and Mike Finch (Hitman: Agent 47), although McG is expected to oversee a rewrite. McG has had plenty of experience reviving pre-existing franchises, having previously directed Charlie's Angels and Terminator Salvation. His latest project is The Babysitter, a horror-comedy starring Bella Thorne, as we previously reported.
The He-Man character is owned by Mattel. Although Hasbro has seen success with big blockbusters based on their toys like Transformers and Battleship, Mattel's films have mainly been direct-to-video cartoons based on properties like Hot Wheels and Barbie. The original Masters of the Universe was the biggest movie based on a Mattel toy line, but it was not very successful at the box office.
