Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are opening about their conscious decision to avoid divorce at all costs, revealing the work they put into staying together.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones spoke to AARP magazine about the actor being cancer-free for five years now as well as their marriage struggles from a few years ago.
"It took work on both our parts," Douglas said. "I don't think there's much chance of fixing a relationship if one of you is already out the door."
The parents of Dylan, 15, and Carys, 13, separated in 2013 but they were back together the following year. Last year they celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary.
Zeta-Jones explained, "I think we're both mellower and wiser. That comes naturally with time. We count our blessings."
Douglas also talked about making up for mistakes as a father, saying, "When you're busy all the time, you don't think about a whole lot of things other than the realities that are in front of you."
He also shares a son, Cameron Douglas, 37, with ex-wife Diandra Luker who is currently in jail.
