Ricky Gervais says if he doesn't drink during Golden Globes he won't be 'brave enough' to insult celebrities

Ricky Gervais is preparing to host the kick-off event of the award season, the Golden Globes, this weekend. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week, he said he plans on drinking steadily throughout the day and night.

Gervais, who was asked back despite skewering celebrities in the audience the last time he hosted in 2011, said he will start drinking in the afternoon.

He told DeGeneres, "If I didn't drink, I wouldn't be brave enough to say some of the things I'm going to say."

Gervais added he will start drinking "at a reasonable hour – I'm not a maniac – 3 or 4 or something like that."

On New Year’s Day, Gervais apologized in advance for offending celebrities at the Golden Globes, tweeting, “Because I can see the future, I'd like to apologise now for the things I said at next week's Golden Globes. I was drunk & didn't give a f--k.”
