Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles will no longer be clashing in the medical examiner’s room soon. TNT announced today that Rizzoli & Isles will be ending after an upcoming short seventh season.
While the hit summer cable series was in the middle of its sixth season in July, TNT announced that the show would get a seventh season with just 13 episodes. That would make it the shortest season since its 10-episode freshman run.
Considering the short order, it was easy to think that Rizzoli & Isles was coming to an end. TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly confirmed that today at the TV Critics Association Press Tour.
“That will be the final season,” Reilly confirmed, reports Entertainment Weekly. “I think both ladies have had a really satisfying experience. I don’t know that they wouldn’t do anymore, but I think they felt very comfortable that it’s had a good run. It felt like it was time. Everyone said, ‘Let’s go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.’”
Rizzoli & Isles stars Angie Harmon as Jane and Sasha Alexander as Maura. Alexander won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Actress last night. The series was based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen.
The show still draws strong ratings for TNT, but it wouldn’t fit in with the much darker shows in the pipeline. Some of the shows coming soon are Good Behavior, Animal Kingdom and The Alienist.
