Lenny Abrahamson's Room earned its biggest box office weekend after the Oscar nominations were announced.

Room earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.

The Wrap reported that the movie expanded to 293 theaters this weekend and earned a projected four-day total of $893,357. The movie plans to expand 1,000 theaters next weekend. Distributor A24 had been waiting to expand the film to a wider release until after the nominations had been announced. Prior to the Oscar nominations, the film had only grossed $5 million.

"We did some research here and we can’t find another Oscar-nominated movie that’s taken a jump like that, with the exception of 12 Years a Slave," A24 distribution chief Heath Shapiro told TheWrap.

Room is the story of Joy, played by Brie Larson, who is held against her will with her young son (Jacob Tremblay) in a small shed for five years. Upon their release from captivity, the adjustment to the real world is extreme and emotional. You can read our review here.
