The Writers Guild of America had some surprises in store on Wednesday when it announced the nominees for its movie screenplay awards. Nominations for Spotlight, Carol and The Big Short may have been expected, but the nominations for Trainwreck, The Martian and Trumbo were unexpected.
Trainwreck was the film debut of comedian Amy Schumer, who also wrote the screenplay. It hasn’t been much of an awards player lately, but clearly members of the Writers Guild liked her work.
Trumbo has also surprisingly done well with the guilds. It was written by John McNamara and is based on Bruce Cook’s biography of Blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
It’s also exciting to see Sicario earn a nomination for Taylor Sheridan's screenplay. The Denis Villeneuve-directed thriller has picked up some steam, especially after earning a nomination from the Producers Guild of America.
