Starz is targeting a Latino audience with its newest projects. The premium cable network announced three new projects today during the Television Critics Association Press Tour, all by Hispanic creators.
Up first is Maleficio, which will be co-produced with Televisa USA. It is based on the popular Mexican show El Maleficio (1983-84) and will be written by Mauricio Katz (The Bridge) and director Pedro Peirano (No). Katz will be showrunner and Periano will co-wrote the first episode and is an executive producer.
Maleficio centers on Don Enrique De Martino, a Mexican businessman who makes a dangerous deal with the Devil.
Next up is Santeria, from Cuban writer/director Alejandro Brugues (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) and Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project). Gregg Hale is an executive producer.
Santeria is set in Cuba, where a secret war between sects of the titular ancient religion has broken out. Two agents investigating a murder are sucked into the strange war.
The third series is Pour Vida, which is set in East Los Angeles. It is inspired by a short story by Richard Villegas Jr. and is about twin sisters who open a bar in a building filled with interesting characters. Big Beach TV is producing and the executive producers include Marc Turtletaub, Dan Pasternack and Erin Keating.
