The Tennessee Titans fired general manager Ruston Webster on Monday as they make changes to their front office.
Webster’s contract with the Titans expired at the end of the season. Steve Underwood will be the team’s president and chief executive officer and oversee the searches for a new GM and a new coach with his interim tag removed, according to the Associated Press. Vin Marino, the vice president of football operations, will run the operations during the new GM search. Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey will be a candidate for the coaching job and will interview for the position.
"I would like to thank Ruston Webster for all of his efforts with our franchise, as he is a man of great character and integrity and someone for whom we I have tremendous respect," Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "Our mission is to become one of the elite franchises in the National Football League, and we have fallen short of this goal in recent years."
USA Today notes that Webster thanked the Titans organization for the opportunity to be the general manager and he wished the team the best of luck in the future.
Webster joined the Titans in 2010 as vice president of player personnel. He became the GM in 2012. Webster drafted Marcus Mariota last season and linebacker Avery Williams in 2014. The Titans were 18-46 under Webster, which is tied for the second worst in the NFL, according to ESPN. Mularkey, who became the interim coach after Ken Whisenhunt was fired in November, was 2-7 as the interim coach.
The Titans were 3-13 this season and will pick first in this year’s draft.
