As expected, Tom Coughlin will not be coaching the New York Giants in 2017.

ESPN tweeted on Black Monday, that Coughlin informed his coaching staff that the team was making a change at his position.

The news does not come as surprise as it was expected that this would be the 69-year-old’s last year with the team. He knew it, management knew it, his players knew it and the fanbase knew it as they gave him a standing ovation when he walked off the field yesterday after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Moments after the news of his resignation broke, Coughlin released a statement which read in part, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach of the New York Football Giants. This is not a sad occasion for me. I have spent 15 years with this organization as an assistant and head coach and was fortunate to be part of three Super Bowl winning teams.”

Coughlin of course won two championships as head coach and one as wide receivers coach under Bill Parcells.

Whether or not Coughlin will coach somewhere in the NFL again is unclear, but whenever he chooses to walk away from the game completely it is extremely likely that he will end up in Canton.
