For 10 years, Tom Welling was Clark Kent on Smallville. Now that he’s attempting a comeback on television, the actor was asked about the odds of ever playing the role again on Supergirl.

Welling sat down for an interview with BuzzFeed’s Jarett Wieselman. While what did make the final published interview was a fascinating look at how Welling has changed since Smallville ended in 2011, Wieselman didn’t include Welling’s comment about possibly returning to the character. The writer and his editors probably didn’t include it because Welling revealed that there’s no news on that front.

“There’s people who would like it... there’s people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever actually asked me to do it,” Welling revealed. “So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point. He would obviously be Superman...”

In the interview with BuzzFeed, Welling said that he is happy that Smallville had such an influence on the current television landscape, which includes several superhero shows on ABC, The CW, CBS and Netflix.

“It’s a compliment,” Welling said. “I’m very proud of shows like Arrow [and] The Flash. … They’re able to ground these characters so that the viewer can relate on a human level to people who used to be only in two dimensions.”

Since Smallville ended, Welling hasn’t done much acting. He was in the 2013 ensemble drama Parkland and the 2014 Kevin Costner movie Draft Day. His next project is the Nicolas Sparks movie The Choice, which hits theaters on Feb. 5. He will star in Section 13, if CBS greenlights the pilot.
