Mel Gibson celebrated his 60th birthday on Sunday. He has had an expansive film career filled with many highs and some extreme lows. Gibson started out doing roles on a variety of television shows and landed a breakout role when he was cast as Max in the original 1979 Mad Max. It was with that movie and many following, such as Braveheart, Maverick and What Women Want, that Gibson became a household name.
It wasn't until later in Gibson's career that things took a turn. Upon numerous incidents of Gibson saying anti-Semitic and racist things, his fame in Hollywood started to dwindle. Gibson stepped away from the spotlight and focused more on behind the scenes work. He shined as a director and impressed with Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. Slowly but surely, the Hollywood star has been making his way back both behind and in front of the camera, with recent films like Expendables 3 and The Beaver.
