There might be too much to watch on television and streaming sites, but that’s not stopping Vice Media from getting into the TV game. The online media network has teamed up with A+E Networks for Viceland and has some big Hollywood power backing it.
The project was first reported back in November by The New York Times and plans to launch next month. It replaces A+E’s H2 (History 2) channel and film director Spike Jonze will be creative director.
Sadly, for fans of films like Her, Where The Wild Things Are and Being John Malkovich, it means that Jonze will not have time to work on a new film in the immediate future.
“Right now, this is all I’ve been doing over the last year,” Jonze said at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Wednesday, reports Deadline. “It’s just a different type of film for me. Making a whole channel and working with artists is what I’m currently excited about. Making a movie is a different organism. Normally a movie comes out, and with this channel debuting on February 29, it’s only going to begin.”
The first shows that will launch on Viceland will run between four and eight episodes, reports Vulture. One of those shows is Ellen Page’s Gayction, which features Page and her friend Ian Daniel visiting LGBT communities around the world. One episode features Page’s confrontation with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in Iowa.
Other shows include F*ck That’s Delicious with rapper Action Bronson; model Hailey Gates’ Fashion Week International; a global look at sports called Vice World of Sports, Clare O’Kane’s Flophouse and an “immersive journalism” series called Balls Deep.
