Wayne Rogers, who played Trapper John on the iconic series M*A*S*H, has died. He was 82 years old.

His former publicist told The Hollywood Reporter that Rogers died Thursday of complications of pneumonia.

Rogers’ career went back to the 1950s, with roles on Stagecoach West, Law of the Plainsman, Gunsmoke and The F.B.I. before he was cast in M*A*S*H.

The actor only appeared on M*A*S*H’s first three seasons, but his co-star, Alan Alda, fondly remembered him on Twitter Friday. He was offered to play Trapper John in Trapper John, M.D., but decided against it because he feared of being typecast.

He later earned a Golden Globe nomination for the CBS series House Calls, on which he played Dr. Charley Michaels. He also appeared on several episodes of Murder, She Wrote.

In addition to TV, Rogers made appearances in several films, including Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman and Rob Reiner’s Ghosts of Mississippi.

According to the New York Times, Rogers is survived by his second wife, Amy; a son; a daughter and four grandchildren.
