Donald Trump is coming under fire for retweeting a quote credited to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, but he doesn’t seem to mind that the fascist leader originally quoted it.
Trump retweeted the quote “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep” from the account @ilduce2016, which is a parody account made with a photo of a mixture of Trump and Mussolini’s hair and face, respectively.
Gawker has taken credit for the account, claiming their senior writer Ashley Feinberg and Media Editorial Labs director Adam Pash made the account last year with the goal of proving Trump will retweet just about anyone as long as it spotlights him in a positive way.
During an appearance on Meet The Press after the retweet, Trump said, “It’s a very good quote. I didn’t know who said it, but what difference does it make if it was Mussolini or somebody else — it’s a very good quote,” NY Times reports.
He also seemed amused by it, suggesting it accomplished what he usually sets out to do – grabbing attention. “No, I want to be associated with interesting quotes,” he said when asked if he wants to be associated with Mussolini. “Hey, it got your attention, didn’t it?”
