On the winter premiere of How To Get Away With Murder, Annalise is released from the hospital following the shooting, Catherine prepares to head to court for another hearing, and Wes searches for answers about his mother’s relationship with Annalise.
Wes stands over Annalise, gun still in hand. Annalise is going into shock. Enter Laurel, who’s horrified to learn what Wes has done. In tears, Laurel begs Wes to hand over the gun. Just as she takes it from him, Michaela bursts in. Seeing Laurel holding the gun, Michaela thinks she shot Annalise, so Laurel doesn’t correct her. Michaela says they have to leave before the cops show as Wes prepares to dump the gun in the pool.
Two weeks later, Annalise has been released from the hospital and returns home. Catherine’s hearing is set for the next day, though Bonnie encourages Annalise to consider getting it pushed back. Annalise retorts, saying she didn’t go through everything not to testify. Everything will be fine.
Meanwhile, Laurel visits Wes and reassures him everything will work out.
Back at Annalise’s house, Bonnie wonders if Annalise would like to see Wes. She seems concerned about him.
Wes feels guilty for having shot Annalise and refuses to get out of bed. Laurel tells him his choice has been hard on everyone and he needs to stop feeling sorry for himself.
Bonnie offers to help care for Annalise, but Annalise instructs her to leave. Bonnie tells her to call if she changes her mind.
When Bonnie leaves, Annalise has flashbacks from the night she was shot.
Cue opening theme.
News reports indicate that Catherine is responsible for ADA Sinclair’s death and Annalise’s shooting, but remains behind bars. Philip, however, is still at large.
Back at the Keating house, Annalise takes a handful of pills.
Laurel and Wes go hang out with Frank and the others. Soon enough, Bonnie returns with an update on Annalise. She’s doing great, so her students shouldn’t worry.
Annalise is asleep when incessant knocking on her front door wakes her up. A young mother frantically begs her to take her baby boy. Annalise demands that the mother stay and they call the cops, but she leaves.
Asher and Bonnie talk. Two weeks earlier, Asher gave his statement to the cops asking them to consider the possibility of his dad being murdered. No one’s returned his phone calls, so Bonnie promises to call after Catherine’s hearing. When Bonnie is alone again, Connor wonders why she keeps ‘enabling’ Asher.
Later, Bonnie returns to Annalise’s and visibly overwhelmed, Annalise asks her to take the baby.
Frank shows up to Annalise’s and Bonnie asks if he’s brought the pills with him. Bonnie says Annalise is high on Vicodin and cannot testify.
Later, when Frank relays this information to Annalise’s students, they panic. To smooth things over, Franks says they’re going to write out a witness statement, despite Connor’s reminder that a witness statement could potentially be dismissed as hearsay and ruled inadmissible in court.
Bonnie crushes the pills Frank gave her and puts them in Annalise’s ice cream. When Annalise questions how the baby is doing, Bonnie claims there is no baby. Annalise thinks Bonnie is messing with her head.
Annalise’s students and Frank finish preparing the witness statement. When Bonnie brings it to the courthouse, she explains how Annalise is incapable of testifying, with little avail. The hearing can’t be pushed back again; Annalise must show up.
Laurel visits Annalise and Annalise asks for updates on Wes. Flashbacks indicate that Laurel took the blame for Wes, because she thought he’d fall apart even more, given the circumstances surrounding Sam’s death and their involvement in it. Annalise also asked Laurel to keep a watch on Wes. In the present, Laurel says Wes seems better and mentions how Bonnie told the group Annalise couldn’t testify. Annalise is on edge.
Annalise freaks out on Bonnie for telling her students she couldn’t testify. If she can’t be in court, she at least wants to read through the witness statement. She also asks if Nate’s called. Bonnie tells her to give him a few more days. Simultaneously, Annalise instructs Bonnie to throw out her pills and Bonnie continues to use the baby as a way to confuse Annalise.
A news report shows Caleb defending his sister. Meanwhile, Wes holds a gun, then hides it when Laurel stops by to bring him food.
Oliver isn’t thrilled that Asher is hanging out at he and Connor’s place. Asher is still convinced someone killed his dad, then covered it up.
Nate finally visits Annalise to tell his side of the story. He protected Wes and her other students, since she protected him.
The next day in court, Michaela has a tense encounter with Caleb. Flashbacks from two weeks earlier indicate that Michaela botched her part of the plan when visiting Caleb and a call from the cops revealed the truth. In the present, Caleb brushes Michaela off, telling her that all of Annalise’s students “belong in hell.”
The court listens to Annalise’s 911 tape. The opposition objects to submitting the written testimony and prepares to call the next witness when Annalise suddenly shows and says she’s fine to take the stand.
Annalise testifies. She does well at first, then freezes and has trouble recovering. The court takes a brief recess. Annalise goes to the bathroom and is bleeding through her bandage.
When Annalise continues her testimony after the recess, she admits Catherine shot her parents, breaking attorney-client privilege.
Later, Annalise talks to Caleb and says he should thank her. When the court learns that Philip drugged Catherine, Catherine will look like the victim. Catherine just has to be honest about what really happened.
Following their conversation, Caleb passes this information along to Catherine.
In court, Catherine asks to make a statement and tells the judge what Annalise told her to. Bonnie tells Annalise the DA offered Catherine five years and the pair chats about what happened the night Annalise was shot before Annalise goes to see a doctor about her bleeding.
Wes breaks into Annalise’s house and searches for information on “Christophe.”
Laurel calls Wes to check on him, but gets his voicemail. Enter Frank, who asks Laurel what’s wrong, causing her to break down. Laurel still feels guilty that the group didn’t reach out to Asher right after his dad died. Frank tells her she has to let it go.
Annalise realizes there’s someone in her house.
Bonnie crashes the gang’s dinner at Frank’s apartment.
Wes confronts Annalise, asking her if she knew his mother. He searched Annalise’s house for evidence of their relationship, but only found Annalise’s pills. Flashbacks from ten years earlier reveal that Annalise met Wes’ mother when he was a child. In the present, Wes continues to prod Annalise for answers, demanding that she take the stand. Annalise tells him to leave.
Later, Annalise holds the baby who was unexpectedly dropped off at her house. Suddenly, the baby is gone.
End of episode.
