On this week’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder, Annalise returns to work, Wes' issues take a shocking turn, and Laurel breaks up with Frank.
Ten years earlier, a pregnant Annalise throws up while her students try to organize her case files. After briefly checking in—and chiding them for not following the correct system—Annalise catches up with her husband, Sam, to let him know their ultrasound has been moved up a day earlier. Annalise re-scheduled the ultrasound because she’ll be flying to Ohio on business for two days.
Cue opening theme.
Annalise is cleared by her doctor to return to work. Meanwhile, Wes visits a clinic to get help for his sleeping issues and accidentally threatens to kill himself when the doctor refuses to prescribe him medication. Because of this the doctor is forced to hold him for a psych evaluation.
Oliver is still upset that Asher is leaning on Connor for emotional support.
Later, at court, Annalise’s students wait for her to arrive. They’re a little surprised she asked them to come. Bonnie reassures them she wants them there since it’s her first day back to work and she needs their help. Everything will be fine. When Annalise finally shows, she snubs them, telling Bonnie she can handle the case on her own. Simultaneously, Annalise’s students wonder where Wes is when he doesn’t show up for court.
A fight between Annalise, ADA Lee, and the victim’s mother during court results in the judge ordering a postponement plea. A restorative justice hearing will be held instead. From there, it’s up to Annalise and her students to prepare their client, so all goes smoothly at the new hearing.
A flashback from ten years earlier indicates that Annalise became angry with Frank for flirting with her students.
Wes calls Laurel and tells her about his screw up. He asks her not to tell anyone else. Later, Laurel lies to protect Wes when the others start asking questions.
In preparation for the new hearing, Bonnie and Michaela visit suspect, Jason in jail. At the same time, Connor and the guys look for holes in Jason’s case.
Laurel visits Wes in the hope of getting him out, but the doctor insists that she leave. Following the visit, Laurel passes this news along to Annalise, who seems less-than-sympathetic to Wes’ problems. Moments later, Annalise’s efforts are re-directed when Bonnie mentions Caleb is there to see her.
Caleb wants Annalise’s help. The police won’t tell him anything about Philip, so he proposes that they work together to see where Philip might be hiding out. Annalise refuses, shutting him down.
On his way out, Caleb runs into Michaela, and her attempts to smooth things over worsen the situation.
A flashback from ten years earlier indicates the beginning of a friendship between Annalise and Bonnie as well as problems with Sam pursuing Bonnie inappropriately.
In the present, Annalise kicks her students out of her house when she finds them still working on Jason’s case. The group then moves their workspace to Connor and Oliver’s apartment, where Asher overhears Connor say he only hangs out with Asher because he feels sorry for him.
Wes undergoes his psych evaluation and blames law school as the cause of his problems, despite his tumultuous childhood.
Annalise’s students find a discrepancy with Jason’s case, which proves to be very incriminating.
The next day, at the hearing, Joyce says she doesn’t blame Jason for killing her son and doesn’t want to see his life ruined due to one poor choice.
Ten years earlier, Annalise reads up on her case, while Sam tells their unborn son what a workaholic his mother is. In the present, Annalise tries to mess with Joyce’s head by claiming that some clients need more than just a “talking to.”
When the hearing resumes, Jason expresses his regrets and hopes he can move forward with Joyce’s forgiveness. Barely a beat later, he breaks down and confesses that he shot her son, Tyler on purpose. ADA Lee says Jason’s statement is now inadmissible and she’ll be considering upping his charges to first-degree murder with a death-penalty sentence.
Frank visits Nate at work and persuades him to visit Annalise.
Joyce re-asserts that she doesn’t want Jason’s life to be ruined and asks Annalise to step up as a lawyer and fix things.
In the past, Annalise and Sam attend their ultrasound and Annalise is given the okay to fly to Ohio for her case.
Annalise’s students try to re-group when Laurel tells them where Wes really is and notes Annalise’s lack of concern for him. They all storm out.
Annalise and ADA Lee duke it out over Jason’s sentencing. In the end, ADA Lee decides to forego the death penalty and offers Jason life in prison without parole. Annalise doesn’t want Jason to settle, but he takes it willingly.
Wes mentions his mother’s suicide while still under evaluation. The doctor giving the exam says that Annalise’s shooting may have triggered painful memories of his mother’s episode for him.
In the past, Annalise talks with Wes’ mother, Rose in Ohio. When she presents her case file to Rose, Rose panics. Annalise tells her to calm down; she’s a lawyer, and she’ll help protect Rose and her son from getting hurt.
Just as the rest of the gang is bargaining for Wes’ release, he emerges from the psych ward. On the ride home, the group discusses how Annalise has gone postal and Asher confronts Connor about being his “pity friend.”
Annalise leaves a large envelope at Wes’ door.
Laurel breaks up with Frank. She says their lies are both taking a toll on them. Hearing this, Frank decides to tell the truth and admits he killed Lila.
Nate visits Annalise, but she’s not home. He waits for a while, then heads out. When Annalise returns, she finds a bag of food from him on her front stoop.
Wes opens the envelope and reads what Annalise left for him: the same case files she showed to his mother back in Ohio.
Annalise receives a call from Connor. Connor says he got an email with a video from “that night.” He thinks Philip’s back.
End of episode.
