It’s been quite a busy offseason already for the New York Football Giants as head coach Tom Coughlin left last month and now three players are out.
One of those players is middle linebacker Jon Beason, who as NJ.com noted, announced his retirement on Feb. 10.
"I always tried to give my all and be competitive," the 31-year-old said in a statement. "I wanted to go out and continue to play at a high level, giving my all. I was able to do that."
Beason was drafted in 2007 by the Carolina Panthers and spent the last three seasons with the Giants, but nagging leg injuries kept him out of games the past two. USA Today reported that after suffering a knee injury this season, doctors suggested he pull the plug on his NFL career.
Also this week, the Giants released linemen Will Beatty and Geoff Schwartz. Beatty missed all of last season with a torn pectoral muscle and Schwartz missed multiple games after suffering a broken ankle. Furthermore, the team has to make a decision as to what it plans on doing with defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and cornerback Prince Amukamara, who are free agents. With the recent moves and Beason’s retirement the Giants are saving roughly $12 million in cap space.
