Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a man of many talents, from playing politics to being Larry David. He can also act, as a video from a 1999 low-budget romantic comedy proves.
This week, a clip of the Democratic presidential candidate in My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception went viral. Even though it has been on YouTube since September, it is just now getting attention after Sanders’ strong second-place finish in Iowa.
In the scene, Sanders plays Rabbi Manny Shevitz, which gives you an idea of the kind of humor that’s in the film. At the time the film was made, Sanders was still representing Vermont in the House of Representatives.
The film was made by Martin Guigui, who spoke with Entertainment Weekly about working with Sanders, who was the only one he could think of to play the rabbi role.
“We had a blast,” Guigui told EW. “I remember it like it was yesterday. I think he did one take — he nailed it in one take. He stuck to the script, and he knew what he wanted to do.”
