A terrifying scene unfolded in Lower Manhattan Friday morning when a construction crane fell from a building and onto the street below; killing at least one person and injuring two others.
The New York Daily News noted that the crane collapsed just before 8:30 a.m. and crushed several parked cars in front of a Weill Cornell Medical Associates building. One person was killed instantly and another was trapped inside a vehicle before emergency personnel was able to free them. Another person was injured as well and taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
The collapse happened in the TriBeCa area, just a few blocks from the World Trade Center.
More than 100 firefighters from 25 different units were called to the scene. Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause.
Many streets around where the huge crane fell have been closed off including Worth St. between West Broadway and Hudson St.; southbound West Broadway from Canal St. to the Battery; and northbound West Broadway from Greenwich St. to the Battery. Authorities ask that you avoid those areas.
