Unbelievably, NBC has decided to renew Superstore. Yes, you read that right.
NBC announced the news today, adding that the show has earned some decent numbers since debuting in January. Superstore averaged a 2.1 18-49 rating and 6.9 million viewers overall in Nielsen’s live plus seven-day” numbers.
“We’re thrilled to renew a show that’s incredibly funny and relatable, full of great characters brought to life by this incredible cast, writers and producers,” NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “After such a successful first season, we look forward to seeing more of the wonderful America Ferrera, Ben Feldman and the rest of this hilarious cast in season two.”
For those who haven’t been tuning in, Superstore tells the story of the employees of Cloud 9, a Midwest big-box store that resembles one particular real-life chain. It stars America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Goldon Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Bloom and Lauren Ash.
The series was created by The Office veteran Justin Spitzer, who has figured out unique ways to make sure the show isn’t just The Office in a store. Ruben Fleischer, David Bernard, Game Miller, Jonathan Green and Spitzer are the executive producers.
This is surprising news for a show, which just ended its freshman season, that got off to a bad start, even before it aired. In October, NBC announced that the show’s freshman season would only run 11 episodes instead of a more traditional 13. Eva Longoria’s Telenovela was also cut from 13 to 11.
While Telenovela has been doing as well in the ratings as Superstore, NBC didn’t announce the show’s fate. In an interview with TVInsider, Longoria said she really hopes the show survives.
