New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre Paul has filed a lawsuit against sports giant ESPN and its NFL insider Adam Schefter for posting his medical records after he seriously injured his hand in a fireworks accident.
The New York Post reported that JPP filed the suit on Feb. 24 and claimed that his privacy was violated when Schefter shared a photo of his medical chart via Twitter.
As previously reported, Paul blew off his right index finger while setting off fireworks last July 4. He alleged that leaking those records was a violation his privacy as well as the state’s medical records statute.
“This action arises out of ESPN reporter Schefter’s blatant disregard for the private and confidential nature of plaintiff’s medical records, all so Schefter could show the world that he had ‘supporting proof’ of a surgical procedure,” the suit read.
Schefter said that the records were obtained by ESPN but later admitted “there should have been even more discussion than there was due to the sensitivity of the story; that’s on me.”
The suit did not specify a number in which Paul is seeking but it is in excess of $15,000 in damages.
