Reilly Flaherty thought he would never see his wallet again after he lost it at a Wilco concert earlier this month. Thankfully, he did get his credit cards and license back, but not the wallet and the rest of the cash.
That’s because the guy who found the wallet needed money for weed. No, really. That’s exactly what the guy wrote in a letter Flaherty posted on Instagram.
Mr. Toodles Anonymous sent Flaherty, 28, a letter with his driver’s license, credit cards and “other important stuff,” but he kept the cash “because I needed weed, the metrocard because well the fare’s $2.75 now, and the wallet ‘cause it’s kinda cool.” The writer was at least courteous, telling Flaherty to “enjoy the rest of your day.”
Flaherty first thought this was hilarious, but then realized that he was seriously being ripped off. “I quickly went from being hysterical to like, this guy is selfish,” he told the New York Post.
The Manhattan salesman told the Post that he didn’t realize he lost his wallet until he was in an Uber car on the way home from the concert on Feb. 5 in Brooklyn. He went all the way back to the venue after he got home, but still couldn’t find it. Later, Flaherty decided to cancel the credit cards and got a new license.
He wouldn’t tell the Post how much money he lost, but Flaherty did say that Mr. Anonymous didn’t return his $10 Barnes & Noble gift card or Mr. Shiny’s shoeshine loyalty card.
While he did lose money and the cards he got back were useless, the thief’s note did get Flaherty on the cover of the Post. And he met Ralph Macchio!
