Academy award winner George Kennedy has died at 91.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kennedy died of natural causes in Boise, Idaho on Feb. 28. His grandson, Cory Schenkel, spoke out about his death.

"He was a great man who loved his family and his fans," he said.

Schenkel told TMZ that his grandfather had been sick ever since the death of his wife, Joan, last year. Kennedy spent the last month in hospice care.

Kennedy, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Cool Hand Luke in 1967, was well known for his role as the police captain in the Naked Gun movies. He also went on to appear in the final seasons of Dallas.

Kennedy received a Golden Globe nomination for his work in the film Airport in 1970. He went on to star in the movie's various sequels as Joe Patroni.

Kennedy’s latest role was alongside Mark Wahlberg in The Gambler in 2014. Before he became an actor, he served in the Army.
