The Ottawa Senators acquired Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf in a nine-player trade on Tuesday.
The Senator got forwards Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, and Ryan Rupert and defense prospect Cody Donaghey from the Maple Leafs, in addition to Phaneuf. The Maple Leafs will get defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, and Tobias Lindberg, and will get the Senators second-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft, according to ESPN.
The Senators and the Maple Leafs won’t retain any of the salary that is owed to the players that got traded. Phaneuf has five years left on his contract and has a cap hit of $7 million. The Senators were one of the ten teams on Phaneuf’s list that he would accept a trade to.
"We don't expect him to come in here to be a savior," Senators general manager Bryan Murray said. "We expect him to come here and just be the hockey player he is. He's a real good person. [He] competes, he wants to win. He's been in a tough environment. He's been judged very tough in the environment he's in."
Phaneuf was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2003 and was traded to the Maple Leafs in January 2010. This season, he has three goals and 24 points in 51 games, according to NHL.com. Phaneuf has 120 goals and 424 points in his career. He was a finalist for the Norris Trophy in 2007-08, a member of the NHL All-Rookie team in 2006, an NHL First All-Star team member in 2008, and has played in three All-Star games.
The Senators are 25-23-6 and are in sixth place in the Atlantic Division. They are four points behind the New York Islanders for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.
