A release date for The Strangers 2 was announced last year, but now it looks like the sequel will see a delay, if not a full cancellation.

In an interview with Collider, producer Roy Lee said that The Strangers 2 is facing some major behind-the-scenes issues that will likely push its release out of 2016.

"We have a script that’s fantastic, but they’ve had some financial difficulties so it’s unclear as to whether or not they’ll be able to finance the movie," Lee said.

This all but confirms that the film will not make its December 2016 date that was reported by Bloody Disgusting last year. Not only that, but Lee's quote casts doubt over whether the film will even happen at all, which is a huge disappointment to horror fans everywhere.

A followup to the hit 2008 film starring Liv Tyler, The Strangers 2 would follow a family of four who has to make it through the night in a trailer park, but they soon find themselves the prey of a group of mask-wearing savages. Marcel Langenegger would direct a screenplay by Ben Ketai. The original Strangers was a massive hit at the box office, grossing $82 million on a $9 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
