After 20th Century Fox's R rated superhero film Deadpool was a massive success, the studio will be giving the same adult treatment to the new Wolverine 3 film.
According to Comicbook.com, 20th Century Fox recently handed out pamphlets at Toy Fair to promote their upcoming films and the section on The Wolverine 3 noted that the studio anticipates an R rating. Up until this point, every single X-Men movie, including the two Wolverine spinoffs, have been rated PG-13.
This should come as great news to Wolverine fans who hoped to see the character receive a dark treatment for his last hurrah. As we previously reported, Hugh Jackman has said this will be his final time playing the iconic superhero, although Wolverine is expected to appear in this summer's X-Men: Apocalypse.
Conventional wisdom has always been that comic book movies need to be rated PG-13 in order to be financially successful, but over the past few years it has become clear that this is not necessarily the case. Deadpool just gave 20th Century Fox its biggest opening weekend ever, and last year, the raunchy and brutal Kingsman: The Secret Service grossed an impressive $414 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Wolverine 3, which has not yet received an official title, will star Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart. James Mangold (The Wolverine) will direct a screenplay by Michael Green (Green Lantern). The film opens on March 3, 2017.
