The Baltimore Ravens released safety Will Hill on Wednesday, March 16.
Eight months ago, Hill signed a two-year, $7 million contract extension with the Ravens. Releasing Hill will save $2.84 million in salary cap space for the Ravens, according to ESPN. Hill’s release comes after the Ravens signed safety Eric Weddle to a four-year deal.
Hill signed with the Ravens in 2014 after being cut by the New York Giants. He has been suspended three times for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. Last year he had 64 tackles, one interception, one sack and six defended passes, which is a career-high, according to the Baltimore Sun.
The Ravens are expected to have Weddle and Lardarius Webb as their starting safeties this year.
“One of the pluses that we have with both Eric and Lardarius, who are two guys that you might call free safeties in the way it’s been over the years, is that both of these guys can blitz,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “You’re not going to know who’s down and who’s deep, and that can be a big benefit for our defense.”
The Ravens also have Matt Elam and Terrence Brooks at the safety position, as well as special teams leader Anthony Levine.
