Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is departing the series after the upcoming season, but the Doctor himself may be around a bit longer.

We previously reported on the rumor that Peter Capaldi was expected to leave after season 10, so he would exit alongside Moffat. This would make sense based on the show's history. Back in 2009, both showrunner Russell T. Davies and actor David Tennant left at the same time, giving the new team a fresh start.

That still might happen, but BBC certainly doesn't want it to.  Capaldi recently revealed to the Radio Times that the network has asked him to sign on for the 11th season. However, he has not yet made up his mind.

"I’ve been asked to stay on, but it’s such a long time before I have to make that decision," Capaldi said. "Steven [Moffat]’s been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. [New showrunner] Chris [Chibnall] is fantastic, and I think he’s a hugely talented guy."

He's right that he has a while to think about this, as season 11 of Doctor Who would likely not even air until 2018. Sadly, there will be no new episodes in 2016 aside from the Christmas special, and the next season will not be broadcast until 2017. These episodes will start filming soon, though we don't know exactly when. In an appearance on the ITV talkshow Loraine, Capaldi said that he knows the start date, but "for some reason, I'm not allowed to tell you exactly."
