In the most surprising turn of events so far in the NFL offseason, quarterback Brock Osweiler has decided to sign with the Houston Texans, leaving the Denver Broncos scrambling for a quarterback.
The news was first reported by the NFL Network’s Rand Getlin.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Osweiler will sign for four years, $72 million. That’s more than what the Broncos were offering. According to 9News on March 5, the Broncos had offered three years, $45 million.
The Texans also signed former Dolphins running back Lamar Miller, according to Schefter. That deal is four years, $26 million with $14 million guaranteed.
The Texans needed to be a major player this offseason. Although they won the awful AFC South, they were blown out by the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round. Their record was just 9-7.
As for the Broncos, losing Osweiler will make it even harder for them to defend their Super Bowl 50 championship. He managed to keep the team afloat while Peyton Manning missed games with an injury, going 5-2 with 10 touchdown passes and 1,967 passing yards.
Osweiler was drafted by the Broncos with the 57th overall pick in the 2012 draft.
