In a move everyone expected, the Cleveland Browns released quarterback Johnny Manziel after drafting him in the first round two years ago.
The Browns announced via the team’s website Friday that the 23-year-old had been waived.
Manziel was involved in several off-the-field incidents and legal issues during his tenure with the team, while his play on-the-field was not exactly stellar.
He started eight games and appeared in a total of 15. He completed 147 of 258 passes for 1,675 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions for a passer rating of 74.4.
Currently the Browns have quarterbacks Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Connor Shaw on the roster, but a new report suggests that they could be welcoming another veteran signal caller to the team.
According to ESPN, multiple sources have said that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has expressed interest in playing in Cleveland for new coach Hue Jackson. And the feeling is reportedly mutual as the Browns have expressed interest in him, as well. Another team on the market for a quarterback is the Denver Broncos, but any talk of the team trying to get some kind of deal going for Kaepernick has stalled.
As for Manziel, it’s anyone’s guess if he will find a new landing spot. At this point, though, his past incidents may outweigh any type of return a team thinks it will get by adding him to the roster.
